Dr. Kara Frerichs, DVM is an Iowa native originally from the Council Bluffs area. Her passion for horses started at a very young age. Over the years she has been involved in a variety of different disciplines including showing Arabians, saddle club gaming events, "ride and tie" endurance events, and rodeo queen pageants. In the summers, she and her sisters worked for a Shetland pony breeder starting colts. As a child her dream career was to be a racehorse jockey and she spent as much time as she could reading about horse racing and going to the horse races when she could. Eventually, she learned enough about the racing industry to decide being a jockey wasn't the life for her, but still wanted to be involved with horses. She graduated from Underwood High School and started college at Creighton University where she was on the cross country/track team. It was at Creighton that she decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and started working as a veterinary assistant at a local veterinary clinic. She graduated from Creighton with a degree in biology and attended veterinary school at Iowa State University. After graduation, she completed a 1 year internship at Nebraska Equine Veterinary Clinic to gain further experience in equine medicine. After her internship, she returned to central Iowa where her husband, Eli, works as a farmer. They established Horizon Equine Veterinary Services in September of 2018. Dr. Frerichs is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), and American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). Dr. Frerichs is also certified in animal chiropractic by the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA) and Fear Free Certified in equine veterinary care . Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Frerichs enjoys camping, trail riding, and spending time with her 3 children. Their family also includes 2 cats and 2 Arabians.
